Maddy is a high school senior in a small town. She is biracial but has been passing as white due to the pushing of her father. When it unexpectedly rains one day, her hair begins to curl, setting off a chain of irreversible events leading to a horrific prom night. I can't say much more about the plot without spoiling it, but if you know the story of Carrie, you can guess where it will go.

This Carrie retelling blew me away. I am usually not a horror fan, but the premise of this book just hooked me in. And I HAD to read more from Tiffany D. Jackson since reading her book, Monday's Not Coming, and being wowed last year.

The story is told alternating between a true crime podcast in present day and ten years prior. You get to read from the perspectives of several characters, not just Maddy, which I really appreciated. It added a lot of nuance to the story as you see characters processing the events of the book.

I raced through this story in one day and it kept me guessing at every turn. If you are looking for a thrill with deeper themes of racism and the horrors of all that comes with, both subtle and obvious, pick up this book!
