Library Hacks

How to make the most out of your library card!

One of the amazing things about living in the US is our public library system. We have access to so many resources through libraries, not just books! Of course, what is offered will vary depending on the location and funding for each library. Let's get started talking about what resources you may have available.

This is the most popular library app for good reason. Libby allows readers to access their library's digital books and audiobooks on one platform. You can also add several library cards to one account. Just log in with your library card number and pin. If a book is not available right away, you can place holds.

This is another app that allows you to check out books. Instead of checking out books as they are available, Hoopla's format is that libraries give a number of items that can be checked out per month. There are no wait times for these items. Hoopla has ebooks, audiobooks, comics, movies, and TV shows. But libraries may only pay for one of the categories (like just comics).  Just like with Libby, you enter your library card number and pin.

Multiple Cards

Many libraries have agreements with other library systems that allow people to gain cards from libraries that may not be in their region. This opens up so many more resources, especially if your local library is small. Check the library website or ask a librarian for "Reciprocal Libraries". Then you can apply for other library cards which you can use online and in-person! I have found this to be very helpful to lessen wait times on Libby.

Printing

It can be expensive to have a printer at home or go to Staples when you need things printed. Many libraries offer free printing up to a certain amount each month. (For example, my library allows 100 pages and 50 colored print pages.)

Get to Know Your Librarians!

This is the best hack I can give you. Librarians know your library better than anyone else and can set you up with all the resources you might need! On top of that, I have found that they give great book recommendations.

Family History

Websites like ancestry.com and 23andMe.com are becoming very popular. But those can get expensive. Another option is to make use of the library's data and research capabilities to find out about your family history. Many libraries can access databases that other people are not aware of.

Library of Things

Some libraries have items you can check out like outdoor backpacks, board games, technology, museum passes, and even tools. Explore your library's website or ask a librarian if your library offers any of these!
