Middle Grade Edition
I LOVED these books. They all got 4.5-5 star ratings from me. One of the most special parts of the reading experience was being fully immersed in a new magical world that was fully unique and developed.
Similarities:
magical elements
a strong Black girl as the protagonist
friendships that you will root for
discovering family history
all part of a series
Onyeka and Amari feature a magical school/society heavily
Differences to Note:
the setting of Nic Blake is different than the other two, as it is more of a quest story
Amari has two books out in the series, Book 2 of Onyeka is out 5/30/23, Nic Blake is out 4/4/23
If you love adorable creatures who get up to mischief and adventure, look no further!
Similarities:
unlikely friendships
adorable art
graphic novels
Differences to Note:
Lightfall is a journey
Gnome and Rat is more episodic
Prepare for wild adventures and perspectives you will not forget!
Similarities:
The main characters go on adventures and experience circumstances that are beyond what a typical kid their age deals with, some slightly more absurd or magical than others
precocious main characters
Differences to Note:
Tone: Series of Unfortunate Events is dark, Matilda is slightly less so, and Bronte Mettlestone is pretty light.
A Series of Unfortunate Events has siblings as the main characters while the other two books feature only one child as the protagonist.
Vivid colors and cozy supernatural elements abound in these three graphic novels.
Similarities:
ghosts and friendships are central parts of the plot
Differences:
bullying element in Sheets
moving to a new town in Ghosts
